Dame Colette Bowe said:
‘The BSB, established a year ago, is delighted to be supporting the 2016 Chartered Banker Young Banker of the Year Award.
Awards like this are an important way of recognising and encouraging future leaders in banking for the right reasons: not just for their contribution to their firm, but for improving outcomes for customers, counterparties, colleagues and communities. After all, if outcomes for all these stakeholders are improved, then better outcomes for firms will naturally follow.
There is still a long way to go to restore trust in our banking industry and trust needs to be earned by actions. The BSB is here to help banks and building societies on their journey to become trustworthy again, but it is first and foremost down to the individuals working in banking to drive this process.
While there is much focus on the behaviour of bank executives, it is those building their careers in banking upon whom we depend in the longer term to raise standards in the industry. There are many inspirational young people working in banking who can serve as examples to those at all levels in the industry. I would encourage as many young bankers as possible to enter the race ahead of 29 April to showcase their professionalism and talent.
As a judge, I look forward to getting a greater insight into the ways in which the next generation of bankers are innovating to better serve their customers, their firms and society at large in the run up to the finals at the Mansion House on 1 September. For the first time this year, I’m pleased that a special BSB prize will also be on offer for the candidate who, in the opinion of the audience, best personifies the high, professional standards expected of bankers through their presentation on the night.’
